In an unusual move for Google, the officially announced an impending algorithm update this week.  Google described it as the June 2019 core update.

The update began rolling out on the Monday 3rd June, impacting Google search ranking and listings positively and negatively across the globe. 

Google usually release core updates every couple of months or so, with the last core update being in March 2019.

It’s unusual for google to pre-announce them, but appears that they are becoming more proactive in the way that they engage with the SEO community.

Google Search liaison, Danny Sullivan, described the release as nothing ‘big’, but that Google thoughts it would be ‘good to let folks know before it rolled out’.  That’s quite a shift from Google.

How Will It Affect You?

As with any update, some sites may see their ranking fluctuate, some moving up, others down.

There have been stories of big impacts in the news, with the Daily Mail’s SEO Director, Jesus Mendez, claiming that they had lost half of their organic traffic overnight!

From our our perspective, we have not see massive changes.  Some clients have seen a slight fall in rankings and traffic (less than 5%) while other have seen their rankings jump significantly, with one website improving their site visibility by over 25%.

We have also seen search terms that we were dominating for clients losing some rankings, which seems to be a deliberate strategy by Google to bring more diversity to search results. 

What Do You Need To Do?

Google have said that they are trying to reward sites that have good content, but may have been previously under-rewarded.

There’s no silver bullet or ‘quick fix’, and the advice from Google is to remain focused on building great content.  This way your content is likely to rise relative to other pages.

This advice validates the approach that we advocate.

Investing in the creation and delivery of high quality content is the most effective way of building your brand awareness online, coupled with strong technical SEO and understanding the needs of your ideal audience.

To overcome the impact of the diversity update, it is worth re-purposing your content and partnering with building product directories and trade magazines to get it published, driving eyeballs onto your content via these channels too.
