5 Top Tips for Building Backlinks and Boosting Rankings

In 2020, with Google’s algorithm seemingly always changing, you might be struggling to know where to start with boosting your search engine rankings. However, one of the keyways to increase the visibility of your construction or building product’s online presence is through improving your website’s authority.

Google’s original algorithm described by Google’s founders in a 1998 academic paper was based on evaluating the importance of web pages based on the number and quality of websites linking to them.

Search engines today rely on the same signal as it highlights how reliable and trusted a source is an answer for a searcher’s query. Backlinks are like votes in a popularity contest.

The more backlinks you have the higher your domain authority (DA) will be. The higher the DA, the more opportunity you have for Google to recognise you are a standout website and increase your space in rankings.

In this blog I will give you 5 top tips for generating backlinks that will build your websites authority and boost your rankings in search engines.

#1 Research Link Building Opportunities

Start by signing up for some SEO tools such as Moz, SEMrush, or Ahrefs.  Then run an SEO audit on your website to discover your domain authority, backlinks, and link building opportunities. Then do the same with competitors and compare the sources where they are linked to and you’re not.

Can you get your website linked to from there too? This will boost your website’s DA while overhauling theirs meaning you can battle for those higher-ranking spots.

#2 Content is King

Creating content that is worth reading and linking to is the great step towards generating high quality backlinks to your site. If people find interesting titbits or stats on your website they are likely to reference you, as it is standard to cite sources. But even just general information, such as blogs or news articles, can generate backlinks if another website finds them relevant and useful.

For example, here I will link Moz’s Beginner’s Guide to Link Building as they are authorities in the SEO space and they are providing helpful information for people to learn from.

Within the building products and construction industry, it’s all about getting as many eyeballs on your content as possible. This could be achieved with a well-thought-out PR and Media strategy where you guest blog for them or submit editorials. Construction magazines are a good start, as you know those eyes will be likely good fit leads too.

But don’t forget, part of link building is reaching out to people in your industry. People aren’t likely to refer to your blog or informative guide if they don’t know it exists.

#3 Online Business Directories

Most small businesses have less than 100 inbound links, yet there are hundreds of easily acquired links available if you know where to look. Here’s a short list:

  • Yell
  • Scoot
  • Europages
  • The Construction Index
  • Approved Business
  • In Your Area

When requesting and researching for back links, make sure to go for quality websites that have a higher if not similar DA to yours. For example, if your website’s DA is 40, a website with a DA of 7 isn’t going to contribute much. However, if a website with a DA of 60 links to you that’s credible.

#4 Think Outside the Box

There are more opportunities for link building than just signing up to websites. Another option is contacting local news outlets if something newsworthy has occurred in your business recently. This can be good PR and also show your ties with and support for your local community.

Also think about contacting universities or sixth forms if you have taken on any apprentices or graduates. Getting a shout out on their website is a great way to acquire high quality links as educational bodies often have high domain authorities.

And finally, if you are paying for adverts or editorials in print magazines, then make sure to ask the magazine to share your article on their website too. You are then creating a back link from an authoritative source while getting more bang for your buck.

#5 Don’t Forget Who You Already Know

Finally, don’t forget that you already have key partnerships with businesses you might be overlooking.

Contacting your suppliers and partners and asking them to put a link to your website is an easy way to generate backlinks.

Think about writing testimonials for other businesses in your network or supply chain. Or you can ask to feature in their blog or a case study on their website. By showcasing the work you do together you can build each other’s website content and DA simultaneously.

Conclusion: Create a Link Building Strategy

If you need more links and a better Google ranking, then you need to dedicate time and effort into fixing any SEO problems you have and improving your domain authority. If you are posting fresh content each week and have top-notch on-page SEO, then maybe your domain authority is the missing piece for boosting your website to page 1, or even gaining that exclusive top spot.

Building links can be a tough puzzle to solve, you cannot be passive and hope that some websites will link to yours.

You need to take action to win quality links, or your site will fade into the background, your rankings will suffer, and you’ll become almost invisible to potential customers.
